³Ô¹ÏÍø legal colloquium paves way for student research to influence national policy
2 min read

³Ô¹ÏÍø recently convened its LLM Research Colloquium 2025, a significant academic event centered on the theme of Global Business and Finance Law. The colloquium brought together the college’s postgraduate law students with distinguished academic experts and panelists for an in-depth exploration of the critical intersections between Maldivian law and the dynamic global legal order. This gathering provided a robust platform for examining how international standards and contemporary challenges are shaping the future of legal practice both locally and abroad.

The discussions revolved around a spectrum of critical issues at the forefront of modern commerce and governance. The dialogue addressed the need for enhanced accountability in State-Owned Enterprises, the shortcomings of current Maldivian redundancy laws when compared with international best practices, and the complex doctrinal tensions between cryptocurrency and the principles of Shariah finance. Further analysis was dedicated to the profound implications of artificial intelligence on copyright law, the international obligations of foreign investment companies concerning taxation and disclosure, and the practical application of commercial terms like CIF and FOB in international trade. The sessions also explored how Maldivian tax law aligns with the international principle of non-discrimination for permanent establishments and assessed the fairness of late payment fines against global benchmarks.

The academic rigor of the session was significantly enhanced by the insightful contributions of Dr. Nfor Nfor Nyabmi, Dr. Mohamed Shekaib Alam, and Amish Abdullah, the Module Leader for LLM Legal Research. Their expertise helped sharpen the students' analytical perspectives, positioning their research within the broader context of global legal debates and encouraging a deeper level of critical inquiry. This mentorship was instrumental in elevating the discourse from theoretical discussion to practical legal analysis.

In a landmark initiative that bridges academic scholarship with real-world impact, the LLM students will advance their work beyond the colloquium by presenting their research findings at the Parliament of Maldives. This unprecedented step provides a direct channel for academic discourse to inform national policy-making, representing a tangible link between the classroom and the legislative process. It underscores a new direction in legal education where student research actively contributes to national legal reform.

The LLM Research Colloquium 2025, an event skillfully coordinated by the Faculty of Shariah and Law, exemplifies ³Ô¹ÏÍø's unwavering commitment to cultivating scholarship with impact. By creating opportunities for students to engage with contemporary legal challenges and contribute meaningfully to national development, ³Ô¹ÏÍø continues to produce graduates who are not only well-versed in law but are also equipped to lead and innovate in the ever-evolving landscape of global business and finance.
