3 min read

³Ô¹ÏÍø today announced the launch of three new LLM programmes. The introduction of these specialized postgraduate courses was officiated by key figures from the college including Dr. Ali Najeeb, the Vice Rector and Dean of Faculty of Shariah and Law, Uza. Asna Ahmed. These programmes aim to cultivate a new generation of legal experts by offering focused pathways for professionals seeking to specialize in high-demand areas of law.

The newly introduced programmes are the LLM in Corporate Governance, the LLM in Alternative Dispute Resolution, and the LLM in Islamic Finance. Each course is meticulously designed to equip graduates with the sophisticated knowledge and practical skills necessary to excel in their chosen fields and to address the evolving economic and legal landscape of the Maldives and beyond.

The LLM in Corporate Governance is structured to enhance the capabilities of legal professionals in the intricacies of corporate law, its practical application, and compliance. This programme is ideal for those aspiring to build a successful career in the corporate sector, providing in-depth knowledge through modules such as Transnational Corporate & Capital Markets Law, International Commercial Law, and The Principles and Practices of Corporate Governance.

For legal professionals interested in the practice of resolving disputes outside of traditional court proceedings, the LLM in Alternative Dispute Resolution offers a comprehensive curriculum. The programme is focused on building expertise in negotiation, mediation, and arbitration, preparing graduates for roles as skilled arbitrators, mediators, and negotiation lawyers. The course includes vital modules like Public International Law, Negotiation and Mediation, and International Dispute Settlement to provide a robust theoretical and practical foundation.

A particularly innovative offering is the LLM in Islamic Finance, which is designed to produce experts versed in the legal frameworks of Islamic financial and commercial transactions. A standout feature of this programme is its inclusion of three micro-credential modules, allowing students to attain an internationally recognized professional certification. This component is designed to provide graduates with a competitive edge in the global Islamic finance market. The curriculum covers essential areas including Shariah Aspects of Business and Finance, Islamic Banking Practices, and Risk Management in Banks.

All three programmes are accredited by the Maldives Qualifications Authority (MQA) and the Bar Council of the Maldives. They are offered fully online, providing the flexibility needed for working professionals across the nation to participate. This approach aligns with ³Ô¹ÏÍø's forward-looking vision of combining theoretical knowledge with practical application, informed by the latest academic research.

The Faculty of Shariah and Law at ³Ô¹ÏÍø is renowned for its commitment to experiential learning. Students are encouraged to develop practical skills through a variety of initiatives, including the Street Law programme, a Legal Aid Clinic, the Judge Residency Programme, and participation in moot and trial advocacy competitions. These activities cultivate essential competencies in legal research, case preparation, and public speaking.

Prospective students interested in these advanced legal qualifications are encouraged to apply for the September 2025 intake. Applications are now open, with a deadline of September 3, 2025.
